TRON: Legacy review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 10 October 2021 03:55 (A review of TRON: Legacy)

This movie has a lot going for it and it is worth watching a few times. It has impressive action, cool special effects, a killer soundtrack, Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, and Garrett Hedlund...but it is also flawed. In the original TRON, Bridges was a mischief maker who fell down a rabbit hole into the computer world and it was fun to see what the actor did when confronted with the strange games and gadgets. And with Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan, he had people to react to him as well. Garrett Hedlund (who plays Flynn's son in this sequel) just isn't as interesting, mainly because the script lets him down. He's just a lost soul who doesn't want to have anything to do with his father's company and for half the movie he doesn't seem very motivated to do anything other than survive. When he finally catches up with his father and teams up with the beguiling Quora, the story gets better but then it sinks into a lackluster father / son story where they confront the bad guy on a bridge.
Despite this, I think TRON Legacy is a pretty good film. It's more original than the superhero films Disney has been making lately. I just wish it had a slightly better story to tell.

Hercules in New York review

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 25 September 2021 03:21 (A review of Hercules in New York)

This movie has some charming moments. It is a low budget affair but good humored. I saw the version with Arnold's real voice.

Wonder Woman review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 29 August 2021 04:15 (A review of Wonder Woman)

I like this movie mainly because of Gal Gadot. She's an awesome Wonder Woman and comes off as very heroic and sexy. This origin story covers all the bases and has good action scenes. It's a really sincere story about one of the most likable heroes to come out of comic books. Some of it is predictable but not in a bad way. Let's face it, if you want to see Wonder Woman you have to give the audience a few things. There has to be a super villain who is connected to her mythical origins so Diana has to face Ares, the god of war. Gadot plays Diana as naive, but confident. She leaps into action very quickly and she has chemistry with Chris Pine, her love interest. Overall, this movie is an excellent introduction to the classic hero that does not disappoint.

Batman review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 29 August 2021 03:12 (A review of Batman)

Frankly, Batman 89 should not have been as successful as it was but they stumbled onto a great marketing gimmick by releasing a trailer that had some bombastic visuals.  Batman cruising around in a missile shaped Batmobile with guns that pop out of the hood.  Breaking through the roof of a museum in that iconic rubber suit.  When that trailer dropped everyone wanted to see Batman because...damn, this was something new. But this movie really doesn't have a cohesive story.  The fatal flaw is that Burton's actions scenes are quite awkward and spaced out by too many scenes where nothing of interest is happening.  When a fight scene finally happens, Vickie Vale screams, Batman dispatches goons in a few karate moves, and they drive off in the Batmobile.  Later, Batman turns on the TV and sees he has to fight the Joker in downtown Gotham,  The final showdown has a real "Burtonesque" circus feel that is like Beetlejuice with missiles and machine guns.  Finally, the hero and the villain climb to the top of a cathedral where Batman just fights a few more goons and knocks Joker's (toy) teeth out into a pool of blood.  Then he kills the Joker and it's just over.  Obviously the public loves bad ass heroes like Batman and if a movie like this delivers enough action to make people forget about the plot holes, then it's a success.   This movie had enough tricks to pull it off back in 1989, but now it isn't a very pleasant viewing experience.

George of the Jungle review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 29 August 2021 02:56 (A review of George of the Jungle)

This is actually one of the better parody films to come out of Hollywood.  It is childish but also pretty darn charming.  Kids and adults alike can enjoy this for it's over the top lunacy and appealing leads.

TRON review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 August 2021 04:06 (A review of TRON)

Similar to Fritz Lang's Metropolis. This film is often criticized for it's illogical computer world where people are forced to fight each other like gladiators using energy weapons.  Jeff Bridges plays the ne'er-do-well hero who finds himself in this fantasy world where he has to  fight an evil A.I..  I think David Warner is a good villain.  He plays both Sark (the main henchman) and the voice of the MCP (the evil A.I.).  He is basically having conversations with himself in part of the movie.  Actually, most of the actors are playing two versions of themselves, depending on which reality the hero happens to be in.  (Maybe that's why some people don't like the story and find it confusing.) The actions scenes were quite novel for their time.  I suppose whether you think they hold up or not might depend on your age.  As a kid who was always looking for something as fantastic as The Empire Strikes Back, I felt like TRON had enough imagination to be a pretty good adventure film.

Lethal Weapon (1987) review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 August 2021 03:52 (A review of Lethal Weapon (1987))

Pretty far fetched story where the cops break a ton of rules to get the bad guys. But it has a lot of action and it's directed well by Donner.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 August 2021 02:40 (A review of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981))

It's the classic adventure of the 80s.  Indiana Jones, our hero, kills every bad guy he comes across (and they are Nazis so no loss) in pursuit of a mystical treasure. Eventually he gets caught and tied up but then all hell breaks loose thanks to the magic of the Ark.  I think it was the dark humor that really inspired a ton of action films to come after this. You can see how finding new ways to kill bad guys became an artform starting with this movie.

The Running Man review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 August 2021 02:32 (A review of The Running Man)

Another "kill the guy and make a joke" movie that works better than it should. Arnold is in peak condition and Richard Dawson is perfectly cast as the sadistic gameshow host. Maria Conchita Alonso actually gets the funniest line when Dynamo comes after her and she insults his manhood, then she electrocutes him.

Commando review

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 August 2021 02:28 (A review of Commando)

Arnold's funny line delivery made him an action star. This is how to do a macho action film without being overly sadistic. The body count is high, but it's all to save young Alissa Milano from the bad guys, so it's okay.
